NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans Privateers engineered a massive second set rally that helped propel them to a 3-0 victory (25-14, 25-22, 25-11) over the Southern Jaguars on Friday night at the Human Performance Center.
Southern scored on five consecutive rallies to build a 20-14 lead in the second set. The Privateers then went on their biggest run of the match, scoring 11 of the last 13 points and the last six in succession.
Alessandra Meoni and
Vanae Sapp each had two kills in that stretch and the Privateers used that late barrage to set the stage for a dominant third set.
The Privateers went on to hit .312 in the third set and had a 14-6 advantage in the kill department. New Orleans also scored 15 of the first 18 points registered in the set behind long service rotations from Sapp and
Lani Alleman.
Courtney Roundtree also had five kills in that same stretch to push her streak of double-digit kills to six consecutive matches. Roundtree finished with 11 kills on the night to lead the Privateer offense.
Sapp provided the kill that capped off the night for the Privateers. The graduate student had eight kills and no errors while she also contributed a team-leading nine digs on defense.
Ariana Brown of Southern saw her five-match streak of double-digit kills end as she led the offense with seven. Jordan Felix added six kills.
INSIDE THE BOX
Celia Mbaya finished with seven kills and seven digs.
Defne Eciroglu finished with 27 assists and six digs.
Ella Moss had eight digs and three service aces.
Laura Piva finished with seven digs. The Privateers moved to 25-2 against Southern all-time in New Orleans.
