NEW ORLEANS – The University of New Orleans men's basketball team will host the Sacramento State Hornets at Lakefront Arena in an exhibition game on Saturday Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.

Basketball, entertainment and Louisiana icons Shaquille O'Neal and Percy "Coach P" Miller have put together the "Southwest Shootout" featuring the Hornets and Privateers. The game will be sponsored by the Team Hope Foundation.

The Southwest Shootout will bring together local leaders, athletes, with special appearances from NBA and NFL stars as well as other celebrities. Over 4,000 middle school students are set to attend with the event focused on fostering connections, hope and opportunities for young people.

"We want to show how coming together as a community can open doors and create possibilities for our young men. This is bigger than basketball, and we are empowering the next generation. We want to bring our community together and inspire the next generation. This game will be a celebration of unity, empowerment, and mentorship," said Miller.

The Hornets finished last season with a 7-25 record, including a 3-15 mark in the Big Sky. All 14 student-athletes on this year's Sacramento State squad are newcomers under first-year coach Mike Bibby.

New Orleans returns sophomore stud MJ Thomas, and hard-working senior Grant Kemp from last season's squad. Key additions to Coach Hollowell's team include first team All-Southland guard Jakevion Buckley and Texas State sharpshooter Coleton Benson. Size should no longer be an issue for the Privateers with this season's team featuring seven players at 6-8 or taller, including a pair of seven footers – William Patterson and Mathok Majok.

The Privateers open their regular season on Monday Nov. 3 at TCU before hosting SUNO on Saturday Nov. 8 for homecoming. Both season tickets and single-game tickets are available at UNOPrivateers.com/tickets or by calling (504) 280-6102.

All Southland contests, and nonconference home games this season will be streamed live on ESPN+. Information about radio broadcasts will be made available closer to the start of the season.
