UNO Hoops Shoots Way Out of 18-Point Deficit in Home Win

Box Score NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans overcame an 18-point first half deficit to defeat Huntingdon 73-68 at the Human Performance Center on Wednesday night.

UNO (6-4) shot 23.1 percent in the first half and trailed Huntingdon (4-7) 28-10 with 7:16 remaining in the opening half.

To turn the game around, the Privateers shot 57.1 percent from the field in the second half with Zach Kinsley playing a large role. The junior scored 26 points in the second half on way to a game-high 31 points as the hosts outscored their foe 48-28 over the last 20 minutes of the game.

Ryan Kinsley added 18 points including a pair of free throws with 12.5 to ice the game. Jaroslav Tyrna narrowly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jacob Moody came off the bench to score 14 points for the Hawks, each of which came in the first half. D'Awvalo Turnipseed led the way with 16 points with Ephriam Hudson adding another 10.

Huntingdon took advantage of five early turnovers to take a 9-0 lead before Reginald Franklin scored with 15:55 to go in the opening half. The Franklin basket was the lone field goal for UNO in their first seven attempts as the hosts trailed 11-3.

The Hawks' advantaged to 12 as UNO's shooting woes continued to a 2 of 15 start. Moody single-handedly expanded the lead with back-to-back three-pointers to start an 11-1 run that put Huntingdon ahead 28-10.

UNO scored the next four points before Moody and Huntingdon took a 40-25 lead into the half. The Hawks shot 44.8 percent over the first 20 minutes compared to 23.1 percent for the Privateers.

Zach Kinsley scored 10 of UNO's first 12 points in the second half as the deficit was trimmed to nine at 46-37 with 16:02 remaining. The transfer from LSU had two three-pointers amongst his early scoring after the break.

The Privateers reached within five on a Jaroslav Tyrna lay-up and three on a pair of free throws by Ryan Kinsley with 11:15 left in the contest. The three-point deficit at 51-48 was the smallest for the Privateers since trailing 4-0 at the beginning of the game.

Zach Kinsley's scoring continued with a lay-up to tie the game at 53 with 9:11 remaining, the first time the score had been knotted the entire contest before another Zach Kinsley basket gave the Privateers their first lead 57-55 with 7:28 to go.

The teams traded leads before Zach Kinsley buried a three-pointer with 2:16 to push the Privateers in the driver's seat 66-64. A jumper by Brandon Knight and a free throw by Tyrna staked UNO to their largest lead of the game, a five-point advantage at 69-64.

Four straight Huntingdon points with less than a minute left brought the Privateer advantage down to one with 48 seconds left. A Brandon Canady offensive rebound on the next UNO possession was trailed by two free throws by Ryan Kinsley with 12.5 seconds left.

The Hawks' last efforts came short as a Hudson three-pointer fell off the mark.

The Privateers will return from the holidays on Jan. 3 for a contest against Division III foe Mississippi College at Lakefront Arena. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
