Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The 2010 campaign for the University of New Orleans
volleyball program started with a loss on Friday night, as the
Privateers fell 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 16-25, 25-18) to Jackson State at
T.B. Ellis Gymnasium in the JSU Tigers Invitational.
The loss came in the UNO (0-1) debut for head coach Kim Young, who came to the Lakefront after six years at the helm of the Grambling program.
Cassidy Asebroek set up the Privateer attack with 24 assists while middle blocker Edina Dobi pounded down 14 kills. Lauren Massulla, one of five newcomers making their UNO debut had 19 digs from the back row.
JSU (1-1) had previously lost 3-2 to Southeastern Louisiana on the day before becoming the first UNO out of conference foe to defend their home court since Sept. 15, 2007 when the Privateers fell to Jacksonville. UNO had previously won six in a row against out of league foes on the road.
The Tigers were led by Chyna Coleman's 14 kills. LaToya Clark notched a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs with Teri Braddock pacing the defensive efforts for the hosts with 15 digs.
In the first set, the Privateers led 15-14 before JSU reeled off six points in a row on Donisha Dunn's serve to take a commanding lead on way to a 25-19 victory.
JSU continued their roll at the onset of the second frame, scoring the first six points on Clark's serve. The Tigers' advantage grew to 10-1 with UNO never able to gain on their foe.
After the break, it was the Tigers who came out on a roll once more, staking to an 8-2 advantage. UNO turned around the scoring with back-to-back Kaitlin Hatcher kills to score 8 of 9 points and carrying the momentum on to a 25-16 win.
The Privateers' sole lead in the fourth set came on a setting error by the JSU offense to make it 2-1. The Tigers took control and cruised to clinching the match.
UNO will continue play on Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana (1-1) at 9 a.m. before concluding their stay in Jackson, Miss. against North Texas (1-0) at 4:30 p.m.
