Offense Improves as Privateer Volleyball Splits Pair of Matches

LAKE CHARLES, La. - The University of New Orleans volleyball team took a step forward with its offense from the day before, splitting a pair of matches in the McNeese State Fairfield Inn & Suites Invitational on Saturday.

UNO (2-6) swept aside Louisiana-Monroe 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-23) with their best offensive output against a Division I opponent this season before falling to Northwestern State 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-22) in the afternoon.

The win over ULM (0-5) was the 16th straight victory against the Warhawks dating back to Sept. 15, 1985.

Four members of the UNO attack had at least seven kills led by Edina Dobi with 11 as the squad hit .291 for the match compared to a .117 clip by the Warhawks.  Kaitlin Hatcher added nine with Kayla McGee and Kaitlyn Crippin having career-highs with seven apiece.

Cassidy Asebroek had 29 assists for the match with Hatcher narrowly missing her second double-double in two days with 17 digs to add to her nine kills.

Stephanie Wardach was the top hitter for ULM, pounding down 11 kills. Setter Meghan McCoy tallied 22 assists with Christy Tibble handling 14 digs from the back row.

In the afternoon, NSU (7-3) was able to clinch at least a share of the tournament title despite being outhit most of the match by the Privateers. The Demons won the finaly tally with a .245 clip to .235 by UNO.

Playing their only match of the day, the Demons received 13 kills from Kourtney Adams, who missed a double-double with nine digs. Sarah Gillis had 14 digs with Lauren Peltier playing a crucial role in the offense with 35 assists.

For the Privateers, Crippin was the top offensive player for the first time this year, coupling nine kills with seven digs. Hatcher had another near-miss of a double-double with eight kills and 16 digs. Asebroek rounded out the group of UNO leaders, totaling 27 assists along with four kills and zero attack errors.

UNO will have a week off before resuming their 2010 campaign at the Human Performance Center at 4 p.m. next Saturday against cross-town rival Loyola. Students from both schools will be admitted free to the match by presenting their student ID.
