Lady Privateers Rise to Occasion in Second Half to Defeat Senators

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Mirjam Sipos scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the University of New Orleans women's basketball team picked up a 64-58 victory over Auburn-Montgomery on Tuesday night.

The double-double was the third on the season for Sipos, the lone scholarship player on the UNO (2-17) roster. Sipos previously netted double-double performances against Dallas Christian and Dillard.

Dinnelle Cormier added 14 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Privateers shot a season-high 51 percent from the field. UNO shot 62.5 percent in the second half to bounce back from a nine-point deficit at the half.

Carlie Ainsworth scored 22 points to pace AUM (9-12) with Stephanie Torrence coming off the bench to score 12.

UNO had the early advantage in the game, leading by as much as four in the game's first 10 minutes. The Senators had the hot hand to close the opening half by scoring 23 of the final 34 points scored to enter the break with a 35-26 advantage.

The Lady Privateers' hole grew to 12 points as Ainsworth drained a three-pointer with 10:42 remaining to give AUM a 49-37 lead.

UNO would not back down as Sipos scored five points before Spring Drake nailed a three-pointer with 8:21 left in the game to cap a 12-0 run to tie the game. The Lady Privateers continued to score and the run would reach 19 straight points with a Kendracia Valmont three-pointer pushing the lead to seven at 56-49.

The Senators had not thrown in the towel as another Ainsworth three-pointer allowed the hosts to reach within two of UNO with just 30 seconds left. Sipos became the hero in the game's final 30 seconds, making all four free throw attempts to seal the win.

UNO shot 62.5 percent in the second half with Cormier making 5 of 7 shots and Drake capitalizing on 3 of 4 attempts to lead the way.

The Lady Privateers will head to Dallas for a pair of games beginning on Saturday against Dallas Christian at 1 p.m. before concluding Sunday at 1 p.m. against the University of Dallas.
