Belhaven Overcomes Early Disadvantage in Defeating Lady Privateers

JACKSON, Miss. - After trailing early in the contest, Belhaven put together a 16-0 run that sparked their offense on way to a 88-36 victory over the University of New Orleans on Tuesday night.

Four players reached double-figures for Belhaven (10-4) with Kiara Johnson scoring a game-high 16 points as the hosts bounced back from an early 10-9 deficit and put on the game-changing run. Regena Jackson added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Blazers, who won their third straight after shooting 57.1 percent from the field after a sluggish start against UNO (0-13).

Dinnelle Cormier paced the Lady Privateers in the loss with 12 points. The leading scorer for UNO picked up her fourth foul early in the second half and was not able to energize an offense which had topped 50 points in its previous four contests.

Kendracia Valmont added eight points for the Lady Privateers.

UNO had several early advantages in the game, taking their last on a lay-up by Megan Buckley with 12:17 remaining before halftime that gave the visitors a 10-9 edge. From there, it was a Belhaven 16-0 run that turned a deficit into a 25-10 lead.

Buckley scored another basket, seven minutes after her previous one, to end the run. At that point, it was too late as the Blazers' advantage grew to 40-20 at the half after the team shot 18 of 31 from the field over the first 20 minutes.

The win was the second on the year for Belhaven, who defeated UNO on Dec. 1 at Lakefront Arena.

The Lady Privateers will return to Lakefront Arena for a Thursday matinee against Dallas Christian, starting at 1 p.m. The team will then travel across town to Loyola for a 12 p.m. contest on Saturday.
