UNO vs Xavier
NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans volleyball program will face crosstown foe Xavier for the first time in school history when they travel to The Barn on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. match.
UNO (2-10) has dropped its last six contests since defeating Southern-New Orleans on Sept. 14 in The Castle.
With a young group of players that has faced their fair share of bumps as of late, Privateer head coach Kim Young-Buford has looked to
Jessie Mouton to step up and serve in a utility role.
Mouton is no stranger to versatility, earning all-district honors while playing outside hitter, defensive specialist and setter in high school.
The UNO school-record holder in attack attempts from the defensive position, Mouton saw time at the setter position on Saturday against West Alabama – her first appearance in handling the duties this season.
Showing growth on the floor alongside Mouton are freshmen
Tory Hearn and
Elena Villar.
Hearn has been a consistent presence in the lineup since the match at Centenary and has contributed no less than three kills a match. Villar enters the week after posting a team-high two kill per frame average over the weekend.
The trio will look to turn the tide against a XULA (10-3) squad that is undefeated at home with a 5-0 mark inside The Barn and have not fallen at home since a 3-0 loss to Loyola on Nov. 8, 2010.
The Gold Rush have won nine of their last 10 matches, a run that includes Division I wins over Mississippi Valley State and Alcorn State.
Taylor Reuther is the top hitter for first-year head coach Christabell Hamilton. The former Dominican standout is averaging team-highs with 3.66 kills and 3.4 digs a frame.
Following Wednesday's match, UNO will travel to Georgia for a pair of Gulf South Conference contests against Valdosta State on Friday and West Georgia on Saturday.
