Errors Prove Costly in Defeat as UNO Falls to Xavier

Gold Nuggets Win First-Ever Contest against Privateers

NEW ORLEANS – Xavier defended their home court in defeating the University of New Orleans 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-12) on Wednesday night at The Barn.

Jeanay Butler and Moira Kirk had seven kills apiece as XULA (11-3) won the first meeting between the Crescent City schools.

Three-time Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Taylor Reuther was held to just five kills for the Gold Nuggets and an accompanying five errors for the match.

Jasmyne Walker led the UNO (2-11) offense with seven kills. Evelyn Kovacs contributed six kills as the Privateers hit -.027 as a collective for the match.

Errors proved to be the difference as UNO totaled 27 attack errors, nine service errors, seven return errors and three ball-handling errors. All told, the Privateers contributed 46 total points for the hosts.

UNO trailed 7-3 out of the gate in the opening set before scoring seven straight to take a 10-7 lead.  The Privateers struggled on the attack for the frame, hitting -.121 allowing XULA to gain the advantage back on way to a 25-18 victory.

Another slow start in the second set riddled UNO as the Gold Nuggets built a 10-point advantage at 21-11. The Privateers were resilient, scoring eight straight points on Tory Hearn's serve to get within two points before XULA pulled out a 25-21 victory.

With their eye on closing the match, the Gold Nuggets never trailed in the final frame. XULA hit .476 and took advantage of 15 UNO errors to claim a 25-12 final set.

UNO will now turn its attention back to Gulf South Conference play, first venturing to Valdosta State on Friday night at 6 p.m. CT before playing West Georgia on Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
