NEW ORLEANS – Southern-New Orleans came away with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-19, 24-26, 25-20) victory over the University of New Orleans on Wednesday night at the Human Performance Center.
SUNO (15-9) received 15 kills from Christal Hollins in the victory. Zipporah Washington and Sabrina Scott added 13 and 10 kills, respectively as the Knights avenged a 3-0 loss to their Lakefront neighbor earlier the season.
Defensively SUNO stepped up to the forefront by posting a total of 98 digs. Shametria Gonzales accounted for 26 of the digs while Hollins added 24 to lead five players into double-figure digs.
Laila Hansen pounded out 17 kills for UNO (2-20) with
Tory Hearn contributing another 10. In addition to leading both teams in kills, Hansen was the top defensive player on either side of the floor with 19 digs.
Jessie Mouton was second on the Privateer squad with 16 digs followed by
Elena Villar with 15.
Ryan Hamilton totaled 13 digs to go with her 32 assists with
Rebecca Lacey rounding out the double-figure dig contributors with 10.
SUNO hit .172 for the match, dipping to a low of .102 in the third frame which went to UNO. The Privateers' third-set attack effort of .167 was their tops for the match as the squad finished .121 in total for the contest.
The Privateers will close out their season with matches on Friday against Valdosta State at 6 p.m. and Saturday against West Georgia at 2 p.m. Both contests will take place at the Lakefront Arena Auxiliary Gym with fans strongly encouraged to park on the North Shell Lot.
