Yosha Watson's near triple-double performance was not enough for the University of New Orleans in a 76-61 loss to Birmingham Southern in a women's basketball contest on Sunday afternoon at Bill Battle Coliseum.
Watson established a career-high with 21 points and eight steals to go along with nine rebounds as UNO fell to 0-9 on the season. The eight steals represented the 7
th most by a Lady Privateer in school history for the freshman.
Watson's career-high scoring output was one of two on the day for UNO, joining
Mechel'le Thomas, who made 7 of 10 attempts from the field en route to 17 points. Watson was 9 of 15 as the duo accounted for 16 of the Lady Privateers' 26 made baskets in the contest.
A slow shooting start for UNO allowed BSC (4-3) to gain control of the contest from the opening tip.
The Lady Privateers shot 10 of 36 from the field in the first half in comparison to 53.3 percent on 16 of 30 shooting for the host Panthers. UNO's first five misses of the contest allowed BSC to score nine unanswered points before Watson nailed a jumper with 16:17 left before the halftime break.
With four players scoring at least six points and the team counting five three-pointers to their totals over the first 20 minutes, the Panthers led 40-23 at the half.
The Lady Privateer offensive production increased significantly in the second half.
Watson scored 15 of her 21 points during the game's final 20 minutes, helping UNO to a 59.3 percent shooting clip during the period of time on the court. The sharp shooting allowed the Lady Privateers to outscore BSC 38-36 after the half, but it was not enough to overcome the early deficit.
The Panthers managed to shoot 45.8 percent from the field and added four more three-pointers in the second half to keep UNO at bay. The lead grew to a high of 22 points with 4:44 remaining.
Caroline King was the leading scorer with 21 points for BSC. Melanie Short and Kristian Moody had 12 points apiece with Alex Adams contributing 11.
The Privateers will continue their season on Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Pensacola, Fla. against West Florida.
