UNO-NT Box Score

DENTON, Texas – The University of New Orleans' offense could not continue its momentum from prior to the holiday break, falling 78-47 to North Texas on Tuesday night at The Super Pit.

Playing for the first time since Dec. 18, UNO (9-5) posted its first loss of the month while seeing its six-game win streak snapped.

Lovell Cook scored a team-high 16 points to lead the Privateers, who also received 15 points from Antonio Wertz. The duo of Cook and Wertz finished 12 of 18 from the field in the contest for a 66.6 percent clip.

The remainder of the squad was 6 of 34 leading to an overall 34.6 clip for UNO, which dipped under 40 percent shooting for just the second time in its last eight games.  The Privateers had not shot less than 43 percent since a Dec. 1 victory at Dillard.

NT (7-6) did not have similar offensive struggles in their first contest since a Dec. 22 loss to LSU.

Shooting 52.5 percent from the field behind the scoring exploits of Tony Mitchell, the Mean Green only trailed twice in the contest. Mitchell scored 15 points on 4 of 5 shooting from the field and a 7 of 8 outing from the charity stripe.

Other double-figure scorers were Chris Jones and Alzee Williams with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Mean Green got off to a quick start by scoring the first six points of the contest.

The Privateers reeled off 11 of the next 15 points to take an 11-10 lead capped by a Wertz three-pointer with 13:51 before the break. Wertz scored five of UNO's points during the run with Lenny Harmon adding another four in his first stint off the bench in the game.

The teams would change leads with the Privateers grabbing their final lead of the contest at the 10:48 mark of the first half on a Cook jumper. Though there were nearly 11 minutes remaining before the half, UNO would only make three more field goals.

A Darrell Williams' three-pointer with 4:24 remaining proved to be the Privateers' last field goal of the opening half. The shot got UNO within three of the Mean Green, who scored 13 of the next 14 points to take a 38-23 advantage into the half.

NT shot 50 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes, connecting on 14 of 28 shots. The hosts also took advantage of their charity stripe attempts, making 9 of 11.

Wertz helped the Privateers find their shot early in the second half, making three consecutive field goals in the first 1:38 of the second half to cut the deficit to 11 points at 40-29.

The 11-point margin was as close as UNO would get the remainder of the contest. The Mean Green after committing three early turnovers in the second half recovered to make 5 of 8 shots from the field and were up to an advantage of over 20 points with 12:17 remaining in the game.

The NT lead grew to a high of 33 points in the waning minutes of the contest as the hosts' shooting continued to improve with a 54.8 percent second half outing.

UNO will play its second contest in two days on Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT when it visits Colorado. The game against the Buffs will be televised nationally on ROOT Sports Rocky Mountain, available to satellite subscribers on Dish Network and DirecTV.
