NEW ORLEANS - The University of New Orleans men's tennis team swept a pair of matches while their women counterparts split a doubleheader on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
The UNO (3-1) men defeated William Carey (1-2) by a 4-3 score before turning around to defeat Jackson State (2-3) in the nightcap 5-2. The UNO women (1-2) fell to No. 21 WCU (3-1) by a 5-2 result with their first victory of the year, a 4-0 win over JSU (3-1) under the lights.
For the men, Vinay Kamineni was the savior in the narrow win over the Crusaders in the day's first dual. Kamineni rallied from a set down to defeat Toni Gauta 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 (2) in a tiebreaker at the No. 2 singles' position to claim the team win.
Hossam Meligy and Abdelrahman Zaki also picked up wins in singles' against WCU, posting straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 5 singles' positions, respectively. In doubles' play, UNO won the doubles' point with Meligy and Benjamin Bouhana rolling to an 8-5 win at No. 1 over Gauta and Jody Claasen with Kamineni and Zaki posting an 8-3 decision over Dominik Kardell and Anton Ivanov.
In the nightcap, UNO overcame falling in the doubles' point to take a win over JSU.
The Privateers won 5 of 6 singles' matches led by straight set wins by Bouhana, Meligy and Zaki. Rohit Chivukula posted a victory by walkover with Kamineni rounding out the wins with a 7-6, 2-6, 10-5 defeat of Vishes Bhatia.
On the women's side of the court, the Privateers could not capitalize on the doubles' point against the nationally-ranked NAIA squad from WCU.
Kozue Matsumoto and Amber Garza won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles' against Alexandra Kaluza and Maja Vuzem with Sofija Karalic and Kristina Martic cruising to an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Joyce Olivera and Petra Pesic to wrap up the point.
When play turned to singles, WCU rallied from a set down to claim wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 positions to take the match coupled with a pair of walkovers at No. 4 and No. 5. Karalic was the lone winner for UNO in singles' play, defeating Oliveria 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Against JSU, the UNO women faced off against a fellow competitior with just four women.
The teams split doubles' matches before the Privateers came forward to sweep all four contested singles' matches.
Matusmoto defeated Victoria Gaedez 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 with Martic winning 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 over Britney Shy. Garza rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 over Asha Saravamchan, while Karalic needed three sets to dispatch Kesica Jayapulan 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Following the busy Saturday, the UNO women will continue their season on Feb. 23 against Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. before joining their male counterparts on Mar. 4 at 2 p.m. for a dual against Spring Hill at the UTC.
