LADY PRIVATEERS GAME PREVIEW
In the opening contest of the doubleheader, the UNO women (0-18) will take to the floor at Lakefront Arena for just the fourth time this season as they begin a string of six straight contests at home.
The Lady Privateers were led in a Monday loss at Spring Hill by
Mechel'le Thomas, who poured in a career-high 19 points while making just her second start of the season. The guard shot 6 of 9 from the field and 7 of 10 from the charity stripe in her first appearance amongst the starting five since the season opener.
The other Thomas on the roster –
Keri Thomas – has provided a significant presence as of late, averaging 13.7 points per game over her last three outings. The recent success included 19 points against Lindenwood on Jan. 9 and 14 more on Monday against SHC.
SUNO is 6-7 on the season, but have run off three consecutive victories while playing Gulf Coast Athletic Conference rivals. Kellie Stewart is the top player on the roster with 14.6 points and 3.5 assists per game.
The Knights have added several new players to the squad over the last few weeks, including April Perry, who has averaged 13 points a contest while playing just three games.
This is the first of two meetings between the UNO and SUNO this season, with a return engagement scheduled for The Castle on Feb. 27. The institutions have split the previous four meetings in a series that dates back to 1984 with the Knights claiming a pair of contests during the 2010-11 season.
PRIVATEER PREVIEW
The men's basketball contest features a UNO (12-9) program hoping to continue their success at home this season.
The Privateers have claimed three of their last four contests, including an 81-59 win over Delta State this past Monday, which improved the team's home record to 10-2 on the season.
A constant theme for this year's team has been that someone has always stepped up for the Privateers.
Brandon Canady was the most recent player to take his effort to a new level, scoring a career-high 13 points in Monday's win. Canady scored 11 of those points in the first half as UNO built an early 18-point advantage on DSU.
Head coach
Mark Slessinger also praised the efforts postgame of
Lenny Harmon, who was a second half substitution on Monday. With the Statesmen attempting to make a run, Harmon snagged three key rebounds as the Privateers put together defensive stops down the stretch to keep the momentum in their court.
Across the floor, UNO will face a SUNO (9-7) program that has reeled off five straight victories with their last loss coming at the hands of Tougaloo on Jan. 3 in their league opener.
Guard Clyde Moore is averaging 18.8 points on 66.7 percent shooting from the field. The guard also leads the Knights in rebounds (7.4) and steals (1.5)
Moore was 11 of 13 against Fisk on Wednesday on way to 29 points. His season high of 35 was established in a win against Philander Smith (Jan. 13).
This meeting is first of two between the Privateers and SUNO, who will contest a game on Feb. 18 at The Castle.
UNO is 5-0 all-time against their neighbors in a series started on Dec. 3, 1973 with the most recent victory coming on Nov. 19, 2009 at Lakefront Arena.
