NEW ORLEANS – Southern-New Orleans made the most of their second chance opportunities in defeating the University of New Orleans 86-71 at Lakefront Arena on Thursday in women's basketball action.
SUNO (7-7) won their fourth straight game as the duo of Kelly Stewart and Janee Morton scored 27 and 22 points, respectively. Morton added a game-high 15 rebounds to notch a double-double and pace a Knights squad that out-rebounded UNO (0-19) 64-42 for the contest.
The edge on the glass enabled SUNO to score 27 points on second chance opportunities for the game, including 15 in the first half.
A double-double from
Tiffany Wallace led the Lady Privateers. Wallace established a career-high with 15 points while also adding a team-best 11 rebounds for her first career double-double.
Four others contributed double-figure scoring for UNO on the offensive end.
Mechel'le Thomas scored 15 points to match Wallace for team-high efforts.
Mirjam Sipos and
Keri Thomas scored 13 points apiece with
Megan Buckley adding 11.
The teams exchanged leads six times in the game's first six minutes before SUNO grabbed control.
The Knights broke open an 11-11 tie by scoring 13 of the next 17 points to move ahead by nine points with 8:50 remaining in the opening half.
The lead grew to a high of 16 points as SUNO's Stewart connected from beyond the arc on three consecutive possessions for a 9-0 run.
The Lady Privateers cut into the deficit before the half, entering the break trailing 39-31. Wallace had consecutive lay-ups during a half-closing 9-1 run that nearly made up for Stewart's spurt.
The momentum continued briefly into the second half as Buckley drained a three-pointer for UNO to get within five of SUNO. The Knights rattled off five straight points to kick the lead back to double-digits with Stewart adding another three-pointer as part of the abbreviated run.
The Lady Privateers got within eight points 50-42 with 15:19 to play before a SUNO 9-0 run put the game out of reach for the hosts.
UNO will turn its attention next to a game on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at Lakefront Arena against Delta State. Tip is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
