The contest between UNO (0-20) and AUM (9-10) is the second of the season between the two schools with the Warhawks claiming a 63-51 victory on a neutral floor on Dec. 30.
Since that contest, the Lady Privateers have become a different team and it all starts with the backcourt.
With three players who are used to putting the ball in the basket, it took some time for the trio of
Mirjam Sipos,
Mechel'le Thomas and
Keri Thomas to mesh as a unit.
Sipos was the lone returnee in the backcourt on the Lady Privateer roster while her fellow guards both joined the program by way of junior college programs prior to the season.
Over the last two contests, each member of the trio has averaged at least 12 points per contest.
Keri Thomas tops the group with 15.5 points an outing while scoring at least 13 points in four of her last five games. The Alexandria, La. native is averaging 9.5 points a game on the season and has hit 50 percent or better from the field in two of her last three contests.
Mechel'le Thomas follows with 13 points per contest over the last two games and enters Thursday with three straight games in which she has provided double-figure point production. The former East St. John standout has contributed in other areas, most notably a career-best five rebounds against Delta State on Tuesday.
Sipos rounds out the trio and has been a model of consistency on the season with a team-best 12.3 points per contest. The native of Sopron, Hungary has benefited from the offensive success of her fellow backcourt players by dishing out an average of four assists the last two games, the first time she has accomplished that feat since early December.
The improved Lady Privateer backcourt will face an AUM squad that rallied from a three-point deficit to score the final 15 points of the game on Dec. 30.
The Warhawks have won just two of their last six, including victories over Birmingham Southern and Spring Hill – two mutual opponents it shares with UNO.
Keisha Moore is the top scorer on the AUM roster with 14.8 points, despite shooting just 31.8 percent from the field. Moore takes a significant amount of her shots from beyond the arc with 38 makes in 136 attempts.
Following Thursday's game, UNO will take a 13-day break from competition before resuming play on Feb. 8 at 4:30 p.m. against Loyola (N.O.) at Lakefront Arena.
