HAMMOND –The University of New Orleans women's basketball team was held in check by Southeastern Louisiana in an 81-30 loss at the University Center on Wednesday night.
Mirjam Sipos scored 13 points to lead UNO (0-15) in the contest. Sipos was 6 of 13 from the field on a night in which the Lady Privateers were held to 22.4 percent shooting.
The pair of
Tiffany Wallace and
Keri Thomas had six rebounds apiece for UNO in the contest.
SLU (5-8) received a game-high 14 points from Brandi Simmons, who also added eight rebounds. Aja Gibson also narrowly missed a double-double for the Lady Lions with an 11-point, nine-rebound effort.
UNO scored the first five points of the game courtesy of a Sipos jumper and a three-pointer to lead 5-0 with 18:41 remaining in the opening half.
The defensive pressure by SLU altered the course of the contest going forward.
Following the two early baskets by Sipos, UNO only connected on four of their next 22 shots heading into the half. The Lady Privateers also had 15 miscues as the Lady Lions carried a 40-18 advantage at the break.
When play resumed in the second half, SLU's offense only gained steam.
After shooting 40.9 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, the Lady Lions shot 53.1 percent over the second half. The strong effort by the hosts allowed SLU's lead to grow to a game-high of 51 points with 24 seconds remaining.
UNO finished the contest with 28 turnovers on the offensive end with the Lady Privateer defense holding the victors to just 2 of 15 shooting from long-range in the contest.
The Lady Privateers will turn their attention to a Saturday home contest against Lindenwood at 12 p.m. The game is the frontend of a doubleheader that also includes the Privateer men contesting Concordia-Selma at 2:15 p.m.
