JACKSON, Miss. - The University of New Orleans volleyball program will seek to snap a seven-match losing streak this week in a pair of mid-week contests.
UNO (3-9) will visit Jackson State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. before hosting Southern at the Human Performance Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Wednesday's match will be streamed live on the UNO Showcase with in-game stat updates available on UNOPrivateers.com.
Both of this week's foes hail from the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
To date, the Privateers have put forth their best four offensive efforts of the season against opponents from the league, including hitting clips over .300 in sweeps of Mississippi Valley State (Aug. 31) and Alcorn State (Sept. 5).
Collectively, UNO is 3-1 against the SWAC on the season with the third victory coming against the league's West Division preseason favorite Prairie View A&M. By comparison, JSU (4-11) was picked by coaches as the favorite to win the SWAC East Division championship while SU (0-11) was slotted as a likely runner-up in the SWAC West Division preseason poll.
In their last contest on Sunday against Houston Baptist, the Privateers altered their rotation by introducing
Ariane Labrzycki and
Nandi Brown into more prominent roles. The debuting Labrzycki totaled a team-high 13 assists with Brown producing a career-best four kills with just one error in nine attacks.
Laila Hansen remains the team leader with 2.79 kills per frame, followed by
Brionne Smith and
Marti Richmiller with 2.21 and 1.93, respectively.
Ryan Hamilton has accumulated the most assists on the season with 308 while
Lauren Levy ranks atop the UNO roster with 141 digs to her credit.
The week's first opponent JSU focuses its offense around the efforts of Christine Edwards. Edwards leads the Tigers with 3.56 kills per set and accounts for nearly twice as many attack attempts (505) as the team's second leading offensive player Jasmine Knight (260).
Edwards factors in defensively as well, ranking second on the squad in digs with 2.12 a frame, right behind Dana Yoshimura's team-best 2.57 digs a set.
On Wednesday, UNO will face a SU squad that has yet to win a set this season through 11 contests.
The Jaguars' losses include a setback against JSU on Sept. 17 and a forfeited match at Louisiana-Lafayette on Sept. 11. The match at ULL was forfeited when SU refused to take the floor midway through the second set after the team was penalized for an illegal jersey number switch.
The Jaguars average just 6.06 kills per set with Jaquel Watts serving as the lone player with at least one kill a frame with a team-high 1.19. Michele Williams tops the team in digs with 2.16 a set.
All home matches at the HPC including Wednesday's contest feature free admission. Following this week's pair of contests, UNO will resume its home schedule on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. against Nicholls State.
