GRAMBLING, La. – Grambling finished the opening half on a 24-6 run en route to a 76-44 victory over New Orleans in women's basketball action at the Assembly Center on Wednesday night.
UNO (1-16) guard
Samantha Gray was responsible for a three-pointer to pull the Lady Privateers within five at 15-10 with 13:34 remaining in the opening half. Following the Gray basket, GSU (3-16) initiated its run to enter the intermission with a 39-16 advantage.
Over the final 13:34 before the break, the Lady Privateers made just 2 of 15 attempts from the field combined with eight turnovers. A lay-up by
Keri Thomas with 7:50 remaining in addition to a buzzer-beating three-pointer by the senior guard provided UNO with its lone field goals over the stretch.
Thomas scored a Lady Privateer high of 16 points, including 13 of the team's 16 points in the first half. A native of Alexandria, La., Thomas shot 5 of 10 from the field during the opening 20 minutes.
GSU built on their advantage in the second half, outscoring UNO 37-28 over the final 20 minutes. Victoya Ricks had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers, who also received 17 points from Cierra Ceazer.
The Lady Privateers will play their next two at home, beginning with Texas-Pan American on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game is the backend of a doubleheader with the UNO men's basketball team, which plays Champion Baptist at 12 p.m.
