UTPA Utilizes Strong First Half to Pull Past Lady Privateers

UNO, UTPA Met Saturday for First Time in 12 Years

NEW ORLEANS – Playing for the first time in 12 years, Texas-Pan American defeated New Orleans 71-56 on Saturday afternoon at Lakefront Arena.

Joyea Marshall scored 14 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for UTPA (8-12). KaeLynn Boyd added 14 points for a Broncos, in a game in which they shot 48.3 percent for the contest.

UTPA trailed UNO (1-17) 11-6 early in the contest after the Lady Privateers opened the game by making 4 of 6 shots from the field. The Broncos responded from the early deficit, scoring 11 straight while holding UNO without a field goal for 11:27.

Yasmin Taylor connected on a second-chance opportunity for the Lady Privateers with 4:24 remaining in the first half to end the drought, pulling the hosts within five points at 26-21.

UTPA ended the first half by scoring 13 of 18 points, including a trio of three-point shots in the final 2:01 to enter the break with a 39-26 advantage. The Broncos shot 47.1 percent from the field over the first 20 minutes, including 6 of 11 from three-point territory.

In the second half, UTPA cooled down from beyond the arc, making just 2 of 7 attempts. The visitors however shot 12 of 24 from the field and jumped out to a game-high 20-point advantage at 65-45 with 7:22 left in the contest.

UNO's leading scorer was Keri Thomas with 23 points. The senior guard shot 7 of 13 from the field, including 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Taylor was second on the team in scoring with eight points, in addition to a team-high nine rebounds.

The Lady Privateers will return to competition on Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. against Murray State. The Feb. 6 contest at Lakefront Arena is the frontend of a doubleheader with UNO men's basketball team.
