NEW ORLEANS – Nationally-ranked
Rui Silva rallied from a set down to provide New Orleans its lone victory in a 6-1 loss to Tulane at City Park on Sunday afternoon.
Ranked No. 110 in the country and 8-0 entering the match, Silva was taken to a third set for just the second time this year by Idan Mark of Tulane (2-0).
With all the matches around him done, Silva prevailed over Mark 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 to hand UNO (1-1) its single point in the final team result. Mark ranked No. 16 in the Southern Region, eight spots behind Silva who ranks No. 8.
Tulane swept the remaining five singles' matches in straight sets.
Abdelrahman Zaki provided the Privateers with their closest result of the five, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Joe Young at the No. 2 position.
In doubles' play, UNO dropped both completed matches.
Hossam Meligy and
Ricardo Campos fell 8-5 to Mark and Dominik Koepfer at the No. 1 spot while
Guillermo Aylon and
David Malmgren dropped their spring debut by an 8-2 result at No. 3 to Young and Jan Van Cott.
Next for the Privateers are road matches on Wednesday at 1 p.m. against No. 52 South Alabama and on Friday at 3 p.m. versus No. 71 Louisiana-Lafayette. USA is 2-2 on the season with its most recent victory coming in the form of a 7-0 win over No. 56 St. John's on Sunday.
