Lady Privateers Fade Down Stretch in Home Loss to USM

NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Lady Privateers held a 31-27 halftime advantage against the Southern Miss Lady Eagles, but after a 15-2 run by the opposition midway through the second half; it was the Lady Eagles pulling away with the 69-59 victory at the Lakefront Arena on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lady Privateers fell to 1-14 on the season, while the Lady Eagles improved to 8-5.

“I was very pleased with the intensity and tenacity that we showed,” said UNO head coach Keeshawn Carter. “We came out in the first half and really set the tone and maintained that pace when we opened the second half.”

“We are a young team and with every game we get better.  Although it is a loss, I believe that we can take a lot of positives from this game moving forward.”

One of the positives was senior guard Mirjam Sipos recording a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists.  Sipos also finished with three rebounds and three steals.  

Other Lady Privateers reaching the double digits ranks in the game were guard senior Michel'e Thomas with a team-high 14 points and junior post player Amber Clay with 12.

A point and a rebound shy of a double-double was freshman center Mathilde Fogelstrom, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.

“A lot of good things to build upon,” added Carter about the team's stat line in the game.  “Our post players produced tonight, and held their own against a very good team.”

USM outscored UNO 14-4 to start the game, but the Lady Privateers steadily chipped away at the 10-point advantage to take the lead – 17-16 – with 10:23 left in the first half on a Thomas three-ball from the top of the arc.  The Lady Privateers would increase its lead to as many as five in the first half just before halftime.

The momentum favored the Lady Privateers in the second half that saw UNO extend its lead to as many as eight points.  The Lady Privateers held their lead to the midway mark of the second half before Southern Miss roared back with a 15-2 run that had the Lady Eagles on top 61-53 with 2:34 left in that game. 

The Lady Privateers went on to be outscored in the second half 42-to-28 in the loss.
