NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team fought hard in the second half, but Jacksonville State hung on to win 54-51 at the Lakefront Arena Saturday afternoon.
The theme of the day was comeback as the Privateers overcame a 10-point halftime deficit as the rally began in the second half. UNO pulled within six at 15:38 to go in the game with JSU leading 32-26. The Gamecocks increased their lead to 39-30 with 11:42 remaining, but they were unable to maintain it as UNO kept the pressure on with a 14-5 run to make the score 46-44.
The two teams went back and forth from there with JSU (2-3) leading 50-45 inside a minute to go. UNO's
Dasia Batiste buried a three-point shot to close the gap to two. The Gamecocks answered, but the Privateers would not quit as
Danielle Davis also drained a three-point bucket to make the score 52-51 with less than 30 seconds, but the Gamecocks held on thanks to their free-throw shooting to quell the second half charge and secure the victory.
UNO was able to manage a better shooting percentage from the field than JSU, including a game-high 36.7 percent in the second half to JSU's 25 percent. UNO finished 33.3 percent from the field as JSU finished 32.7 percent. JSU was also only able to hit one three pointer out of 12 attempts for the game. UNO was 5-20 as a team from three-point range. However, JSU's 70.4 percent free-throw shooting advantage helped them secure the victory in a tight game. UNO was 57.1 percent from the foul line.
Yasmin Taylor, Davis, and
Octavia Wilson all earned eight points each for the Privateers. Davis was 2-8 from three-point range, and Batiste finished 2-3 from beyond the arc. Taylor led UNO with 14 rebounds, and
Mathilde Fogelstrom added 10 boards.
For JSU, sophomore guard Destany McLin led the Gamecocks with 16 points. Junior guard Candace Morton added 14 points. Junior center Miranda Cantrell led JSU in rebounds with 13.
The Privateers begin a three-game road trip starting with Louisiana Tech on Friday, November 29 in Ruston. UNO returns home December 14 when they welcome in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette to the Lakefront Arena. Tip off for that game is set for 4 p.m.
