New Orleans Doomed by Early Miscues at Jackson State

JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State Lady Tigers (2-6) scored 23 of the first 29 points and caused 34 turnovers in a 72-50 victory over the New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-6) on Thursday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletic and Assembly Center.

Jackson State drew out to a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes as their press forced Privateer turnovers on the first three possessions. By the first media timeout of the half, the Privateers had six miscues. Jackson St. continued to use the press to their benefit as they carried a 39-17 advantage into the halftime locker room.

The Lady Tigers shot very efficiently in the 1st half, converting on 16-of-29 attempts from the field (55.2 percent). They also turned 18 UNO turnovers into 20 points and held a 20-10 advantage on points in the paint.

New Orleans was led by Jewel Angelo who reached double figures for a second straight game with a new career high 12 points, topping a 10-point effort at Louisiana Tech. Mathilde Fogelstrom had nine points while going 4-4 from the field. As a team, the Privateers got 27 points off the bench, led by eight from Dannisha Jackson.

The Privateers shot more efficiently in the second half connecting on 52.2 percent of their attempts from the field (12-of-23). However, New Orleans only put up 40 shots in the contest against the pressure of Jackson State.

Three players cracked double figures for the Lady Tigers. Dominique Brothern had 14 points while Kameron Jones and Ayanna Hardy-Fuller added 13 each. Hardy-Fuller also added nine rebounds, seven assists, five steals and a block.

In their first six games, New Orleans has shot more free throws in the second half than in the first half. Tonight, they had 11 trips in the first half and 14 in the second half. The Privateers went 14-of-25 overall from the line on the evening.

The Privateers are back in action on Saturday as they travel to Kentucky to play the Murray State Racers. Tip is scheduled for 1 PM.
