LAFAYETTE, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis was defeated 7-0 by No. 74 Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday afternoon at Cajun Courts.
The defeat was the second in a row for UNO (1-2), which was last shutout in the 2011 season finale.
Hossam Meligy and
Abdelrahman Zaki were the lone members of the Privateer lineup to push a third set against ULL (1-2). In both instances, the Cajuns rallied from a set down to claim victory.
ULL's Jarred Wynn defeated Zaki 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 at the No. 3 court with Edgar Lopez outlasting Meligy 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 4 position.
The Cajuns clinched the dual when the third singles' match came off the court. ULL had previously claimed the doubles' point, picking up victories in both completed doubles' matches.
The featured win for the Cajuns came at the No. 1 position where UNO's nationally-ranked
Rui Silva dropped a 6-1, 6-2 match to Rick de Groot. It was the first loss in 10 matches for Silva, ranked No. 110 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) entering the week.
The Privateers will have to regroup quickly from Friday's setback as Nicholls State (3-2, 1-0 Southland Conference) looms on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the University Tennis Center. The winner of the dual between UNO and NSU will be in the driver's seat of the Southland race and one step closer to clinching a spot in the conference tournament at the end of April.
