PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The New Orleans men's tennis team produced its second straight victory, defeating Prairie View A&M 6-0 on Sunday afternoon.
The win was the first on the road for UNO (3-2) which broke from its usual lineup to produce three new doubles' pairings. Despite the change, each duo for the Privateers was able to earn a positive result against PVAMU (1-4).
Rui Silva and
Hossam Meligy prevailed 8-7 (1) over Kristen Powell and Craig Wiltz at the No. 1 position.
Abdelrahman Zaki and
Vinay Kamineni posted an 8-2 win at the No. 2 court with
David Malmgren and
Guillermo Aylon claiming an 8-6 result at No. 3.
“These matches were close in doubles, but our new combinations came through,” said head coach
Burzis Kanga. “They each found a way to win and the scores were even closer than indicated.”
In singles' play, UNO won four of the five completed matches in straight sets. A fifth match, Meligy's win over Ronald Chidzikwe came in a super-tiebreaker, a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 result at the No. 3 court.
Zaki led a group of straight set victors for the Privateers, rolling Wiltz 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. The remaining winners included Aylon, Malmgren and
Sebastian Salazar on the No. 4 through No. 6 courts.
“I was really pleased in many different spots with singles,” said Kanga. “It was the first chance to see a few of the guys in different positions and the depth of our team shows when they show up to play.
“It was cold, windy day on the tennis courts and Prairie View is a really solid SWAC team that lost to Xavier 4-3 on Saturday. Had we not executed well, this would have been a long day for us.”
UNO will return to Southland Conference play on Sunday at 11 a.m. when Lamar pays a visit to the University Tennis Center. The Privateers are 2-0 in conference play following victories over Oral Roberts (7-0) and Nicholls State (5-2) earlier this season and can clinch a spot in the league tournament with a victory over the Cardinals.
