NEW ORLEANS – The New Orleans men's tennis team defeated Alcorn State 7-0 on Saturday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.
UNO improved to 6-5 on the season and 4-0 at home on the season with the victory over ASU (2-8).
The Privateers began play by taking the doubles' point. Head coach
Burzis Kanga altered his doubles' lineup by playing
Vinay Kamineni with
Ricardo Campos at the No. 1 position with
Hossam Meligy teaming with
Abdelrahman Zaki on the No. 2 court for the second time this season.
The change worked out for UNO as Kamineni and Campos partnered for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 with the Egyptian duo of Meligy and Zaki cruising to an 8-1 win at the No. 2 position.
Guillermo Aylon and
David Malmgren completed the sweep with an 8-4 result on the No. 3 court.
In singles' play,
Dominik Kardell made his spring debut at the No. 6 position to highlight the results for the Privateers, who did not concede a set to the Braves. Kardell defeated Bhavtaran Singh 6-3, 6-1.
Rui Silva and Kamineni extended their dual winning streaks to three matches each. Silva was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at No. 1 against Ernesto Santillian with Kamineni dispatching Garry Amor 6-1, 6-2 on the No. 5 court. Kamineni is the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week.
The UNO men's tennis team along with their female counterparts will host nationally-ranked NAIA squad Xavier (La.) at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at the UTC.
