UNO Men's Tennis Dealt Defeat by Southern Miss

Injuries Once More Force Privateers to Alter Lineup

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The New Orleans men's tennis team was defeated 7-0 by Southern Miss on Saturday morning at the USM Tennis Courts.

The loss was the second in a row for UNO, which dropped to 4-4 on the season.

USM (9-4) won each of the eight completed matches against a Privateer team that was playing without senior captain Abdelrahman Zaki leading to significant changes in the UNO lineup.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to the lead by taking the doubles' point. All three doubles' matches were competitive despite the Privateers having a first time pairing at each court.

Rui Siva and Ricardo Campos were defeated at the No. 1  position by an 8-5 score with Vinay Kamineni and Guillermo Aylon meeting defeat by a 9-7 score on the No. 2 court. Hossam Meligy and Christoffer Appelgren led 4-3 in a tiebreak before their match was concluded after the doubles' point was determined.

In singles' play, USM won 5 of 6 matches in straight sets. The lone exception came at the No. 4 court which featured the Golden Eagles' Paulo Alvarado overcoming a set deficit to down Kamineni 5-7, 6-2, 10-8.

The UNO men's tennis team will remain out of conference next weekend as they hit the road for a dual next Saturday at 2 p.m. against Alabama State. One day later, the Privateers will visit former Sun Belt Conference rival Troy for a 10 a.m. dual.
