UNO Men's Tennis Falls on Road to Nationally-Ranked LSU

Campos Nearly Takes First Set vs Nationally-Ranked Singles' Foe

BATON ROUGE, La. – The New Orleans men's tennis team fell to 8-8 on the season with a 6-0 loss to No. 32 LSU on Tuesday night at W.T. “Dub” Robinson Stadium.

Only singles' matches were played due to time constraints as the dual got underway at 7 p.m.

LSU (11-8) won each of the six singles' matches though UNO did not make it easy for the hosts.

Ricardo Campos had a pair of set points in the first set before falling 7-6, 6-4 to No. 82 ranked Chris Simpson at the No. 2 court. Hossam Meligy nearly forced a third set, coming up short in a second-set tiebreaker during a 6-1, 7-6 setback to Harrison Kennedy at the No. 4 position.

The loss was the second in a row for the Privateers, who fell to Southland Conference foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Wednesday.

“Tonight was a tough loss, but we competed very well in some spots,” said UNO head tennis coach Burzis Kanga. “Playing these last two matches have given me insight into what we need to do to prepare ourselves a little better for the next two weeks.”

“All things considered, I was not disappointed. On another day, we could have done a little bit better, but I think we need to address some things. LSU has plenty of depth and beat one of the best teams I have seen from Tulane 7-0 earlier in the day.”

Tuesday's LSU match is the first of six matches leading into the Southland Conference tournament at the end of April. Kanga's squad will resume their schedule on Friday at 2 p.m. when Loyola (N.O) visits the University Tennis Center.
