NEW ORLEANS, La.- The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-15, 0-4 Southland) struggled to get going from the field as they fell 67-38 to the Incarnate Word Cardinals (7-7, 1-1) at Lakefront Arena on Saturday.
The Privateers allowed the first six points of the game as Incarnate Word scored on their first three offensive possessions of the game. However, New Orleans battled back, and cut their early deficit to 15-10 on a
Samantha Gray three-pointer. Incarnate Word responded with an 11-0 run immediately after in a stretch where the Privateers missed seven straight shots and committed three turnovers. The Cardinals took a 38-21 lead into the halftime locker room.
The beginning of the second half signaled a growing of the Incarnate Word margin as they began with an 8-2 run to push their lead to 23 points. The Privateers were held without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the second half before
Mathilde Fogelstrom hit a floater in the lane at the 11:57 mark.
New Orleans struggled from the field, shooting 19.3 percent (11-of-57) for the game. The Privateers also committed 20 turnovers, with 13 coming in the second half, and were out-scored in the paint 40-14.
Octavia Wilson led all scorers with 11 points, and set new season highs in free throws made (nine) and attempted (10).
Raven Coleman led the Privateers in rebounds with 10, and added seven points. Coleman has 36 rebounds in the last five games.
Samantha Gray added six points on two made triples.
The Cardinals were led by Rose Whitehead who poured in 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Kosy Mora added 14 points and nine rebounds. Joslinn Douglass added seven assists. The Cardinals shot 48.1 percent for the game, and had 17 assists as a team.
New Orleans will search for their first win on Thursday, Jan. 16 when they take on Lamar. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
