Privateers Hit Dry Spell in Loss to Sam Houston State

Box Score

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-17, 0-6 Southland) fell victim to an 18-minute stretch without a field goal as they fell 78-47 to the Sam Houston State Bearkats (8-9, 3-3) on Saturday at Lakefront Arena.

New Orleans struggled from the field for the majority of the game. The Privateers went without a field goal made for a stretch that lasted from the 14-minute mark of the first half to four minutes into the second half. The drought was ended by a Yasmin Taylor jumper, but the Privateers were already behind by 23 at that point. The Privateers were also out-worked on the boards, losing the rebounding battle 54-24.

The Privateers came out strong in the early stages, getting a three-pointer from Octavia Wilson to open the scoring. Danielle Davis followed with a three of her own to give the Privateers a 6-5 lead. It would be their last advantage of the first half though. Wilson drove to the basket and scored a layup with the left hand that made the score 14-8 in favor of Sam Houston St with 14:00 remaining. From there, the Privateers went without a field goal for the rest of the half. They only scored six points, all from the free throw line, and missed 13 consecutive shots as they went to the locker room trailing 32-14.

Taylor fell just shy of a double-double in her second game back from injury. She posted 10 points and nine rebounds in 28 minutes before fouling out late in the game. Wilson led the team with 20 points, falling just one point shy of tying her career-high. The Privateers won the turnover battle, forcing 24 Bearkats turnovers. They committed 18 on the afternoon.

The Bearkats were led by Angela Beadle's 15 points and eight rebounds. Jasmine Johnson added 11 points, and Amanda Barnes had a game-high eight assists. Sam Houston St. shot 47.5 percent from the field as they took their third straight conference game after starting Southland play 0-3.

New Orleans will travel next to Houston Baptist on Thursday, Jan. 23. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
