THIBODAUX, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team opened the Southland Conference portion of the 2013-14 season with an 89-40 loss to in-state rival Nicholls on Thursday night in Stopher Gym.
The Privateers (0-12, 0-1) had two players scoring in double figures in the loss with
Danielle Davis leading the way with 13 points that included two 3-pointers.
Jewel Angelo followed her across the 10-point plateau with 11. The Colonels (6-6, 1-0) featured four players in double digits with Emani White atop all scorers with 19.
Nicholls took control of the first half and for a 10-minute stint, the Colonels outscored the Privateers 24-to-5 to build a 37-point advantage before taking a 47-13 lead into halftime. New Orleans could not overcome the early deficit. Nicholls continued to find success in the second half, building its lead to as many as 49 points before New Orleans chopped the point total down to 35 after two free throws by
Octavia Wilson at the 9:21 mark.
However, that is as close as the Privateers would come to mounting a comeback. After the New Orleans run, the Colonels came back and maintained at least a 40-point lead the rest of the way.
New Orleans will try its luck on Saturday at McNeese State with tip-off at 5:30 p.m., while Nicholls turns its sights to Southeastern La.
