HOUSTON, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-18, 0-7 Southland) won the battle on the boards, but lost the game 66-54 to the Houston Baptist Huskies (7-11, 3-4) on Thursday at Sharp Gym.
New Orleans won the battle on the boards 43-31. It was the fourth time the Privateers out-rebounded an opponent, with three of those coming in the last five games. New Orleans also had 18 offensive rebounds, but were limited to 10 second chance points.
The Privateers forced Houston Baptist out of rhythm early as the Huskies committed six turnovers in the first 5:07 of the game. New Orleans exited that span trailing 6-4, but Houston Baptist went on a 12-2 run over the next two minutes to open up a 12-point lead midway through the first half.
From there, New Orleans was playing from behind by double digits for the rest of the half. They went to the locker room trailing 37-24. The Privateers trailed by as many as 19 and turned it over 18 times in the opening half.
Houston Baptist came out strong to start the second half as they scored the first nine points to push their lead to 22.
Jewel Angelo broke that run for the Privateers with a jumper with 17:11 remaining. Trailing 59-40, the Privateers scored eight straight including a pair of triples by
Octavia Wilson in that stretch to close the gap to 11 points with five minutes remaining, but could get no closer.
Raven Coleman put in her first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. The 10 points tied Coleman's career-high, and her 12 boards marked the fourth time she hauled in double-digit rebounds in a game this season. Coleman also added five blocks and three steals on the defensive end of the floor.
Wilson scored 17 points to lead in the scoring department for the Privateers.
Jewel Angelo added 12 points. Angelo had been held to just four points in her previous four contests combined.
The Huskies were led by Tayler Jefferson who scored a season-high 17 points, and went four-of-six from beyond the arc. Rachel Arthur added nine points while Erin McGarrachan and Shanice Steenholdt had eight points each.
New Orleans looks to break into the win column on Saturday when they face Texas A & M-Corpus Christi. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
