CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - New Orleans Privateers women's basketball (0-19, 0-8 Southland) fought hard early, but eventually fell to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (10-9, 3-5 Southland) 97-44 on Saturday evening in Corpus Christi.
With 10:09 to play in the first half, the Privateers were trailing 23-17 following a pair of
Danielle Davis free throws before the Islanders exploded for a 17-0 run over the next 6:05 extending the lead to 23 points.
Ariele Davis hit a ring-wing three to end the run, the first Privateer bucket in over six minutes of play.
A strong post performance in the first half was the difference, as the Islanders outscored the Privateers 20-2 in the paint during the opening frame. Forwards Camesha Davis and Brandi Huff combined for 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting in the first half to dominate the post for the Islanders.
The Privateers were led on the night by
Danielle Davis with 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including eight points in the second-half of play.
Amber Clay also had a strong night off the bench with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting, her first double-digit scoring effort this season.
Five Islanders scored in double-figures on the evening. Davis led the way for the Islanders with 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting, and also grabbed 11 rebounds. Shola Adebayo (15 points) , Huff (14 points), Kassie Jones (12 points), and Ashanti Plummer (10 points) also scored in double-figures.
The Privateers women return to action on Thursday Jan. 25 when they travel to the University Center in Hammond to face Southeastern Louisiana in Southland conference play. Tipoff is set for 5:00 p.m.
