Privateers Continue Southland Schedule at McNeese State


NEW ORLEANS, La.- The New Orleans Privateers men's and women's basketball teams will head to Lake Charles to take on McNeese State in a doubleheader on Saturday to cap their first week of Southland Conference play. The women's game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m with the men following shortly after.
 
The Privateers men (3-6, 0-1 SLC) are coming off an 88-83 loss at Nicholls on Thursday in a contest that featured 104 total free throws attempted and 72 fouls. New Orleans had five Privateers notch double figures in the game, but also committed 22 turnovers.
 
Cory Dixon went over 20 points for the second time this season when he poured in 21 against the Colonels on Thursday. Dixon bumped his team-leading average to 15.2 points per game, and also ranks tenth in the conference. He is shooting 48 percent (24-of-50) from the field in his last five games.
 
Tradarrius McPhearson is starting to warm up in the scoring department. He scored a season-high 11 against UTEP and eclipsed that mark with 14 points on Thursday night. Freshman, Christavious Gill is coming off a career-high in minutes (20) and points (11) against Nicholls.
 
McNeese State (3-10, 1-0, SLC) is coming off a 69-60 win in their conference opener at home against Southeastern. It was the Cowboys' second home game of the season, and the win also snapped a seven-game losing streak.
 
The Cowboys are led offensively by Ledrick Eackles who is averaging 14.2 points per game. He also has 1.8 steals per game, tied for fifth-most in the Southland. Kevin Hardy is averaging 11.5 points per contest, and leads all Cowboy regulars in field goal percentage (46.3).
 
The Privateers women (0-12, 0-1 SLC) search for their first win against the Cowgirls after falling 89-40 at Nicholls on Thursday. The Privateers conceded a 17-0 run early in the first half over a six-minute stretch.
 
Danielle Davis scored 13 against Nicholls and now has 48 points in her last four games. She has also made eight three-pointers in that stretch. Davis also leads the team in steals and assists.
 
Amber Clay matched her season-high by collecting eight rebounds for the second consecutive game. In her first 10 games, Clay only pulled down five or more boards once.
 
The Cowgirls (7-5, 0-1 SLC) are coming off a loss to Southeastern on Thursday. The Lions had previously dropped their last 11 before their 82-65 win over McNeese in the opening game of conference play.
 
McNeese is led by Allison Baggett who is averaging 18.5 points per game. Baggett has been held from double figures just twice in 12 games, and opened the season with a 31-point performance against Wiley. Cecilia Okoye is second on the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game. Okoye also stands third in the Southland in field goal and free throw percentage.
 
The Cowgirls are coming off a season in 2012-13 that saw them reach the final of the Women's Basketball Invitational before falling to Detroit.

The men's game will be heard live locally on WGSO 990AM and WGSO.com with Jude Young on the call, while the women's game can be heard online at UNO Showcase with a subscription with Emmanuel Pepis calling the action. The women's broadcast will start online at 12:50 p.m, while men's pregame radio will tentatively start at 3:15 p.m.
