HAMMOND, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-20, 0-9 Southland) missed opportunities from the free throw line and foul trouble as part of an 84-55 loss to the Southeastern Lady Lions (6-14, 5-3) at the University Center.
New Orleans had 27 free throw attempts on the night, but only converted on 14 in the loss. Southeastern was a more efficient 26-of-32 from the charity stripe on the evening. The Privateers were also beaten in the paint as they conceded that category by a 50-20 margin.
The Privateers struggled to find their shot early on, and got into foul trouble as well. Southeastern was in the bonus from the 15:02 mark of the first half and attempted 17 total free throws in the opening frame. With that advantage, the Lady Lions were able to build a lead as large as 16 points when they led 27-11 with 6:27 left. The Privateers responded with a strong defensive effort as they went on a 13-2 run to cut the deficit down to five with three minutes left in the half.
However, after
Yasmin Taylor was whistled for her third foul of the half, Southeastern scored the last 10 points to close the half, and went to the locker room up 39-24. The Lady Lions were led in that spurt by Annessa De La Cruz who scored the first six points in that run before halftime.
Octavia Wilson led the Privateers with 17 points and sank three triples on the evening. It was Wilson's seventh double-digit scoring effort in her last eight games, and her fifth straight contest with a three-pointer made.
Samantha Gray set a new career-high by dishing out six assists. Gray's previous high for assists in a game was four in the season opener against Northwestern State.
Jewel Angelo added nine points, all of those coming in the opening half.
The Lady Lions had five players reach double figures on the evening. Nanna Pool led the charge with 21 points and 17 rebounds. De La Cruz and Symone Miller added 17 points each. Elizabeth Styles contributed 15 and Erica Hernandez added 10. The Lady Lions had a 16-4 edge in fast break points on the night.
The Privateers will head to Oral Roberts for their next contest on Thursday, Feb. 6. Tip is slated for 5 p.m.
