LAKE CHARLES, La.- The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-13, 0-2 SLC) took the lead at three different points of the first half, but were outdone at the free throw line as part of an 82-59 loss to the McNeese State Cowgirls (8-5, 1-1) at Burton Coliseum.
UNO opened the scoring 18 seconds into the game on a layup in transition by
Jewel Angelo, which was created by a steal from
Octavia Wilson. McNeese responded by scoring the next eight points, but the Privateers clawed back to take a one-point lead on two occasions. The first was when
Danielle Davis hit one of her three first half triples to put the Privateers ahead 13-12.
Davis hit a layup that gave the Privateers an 18-17 lead with just over nine minutes remaining, which was their final advantage of the contest. Though UNO trailed for most of the first half, they kept the deficit to single digits until McNeese closed the half by scoring the last six points. The Cowgirls took a 41-29 lead into the halftime locker room.
The teams traded baskets, but McNeese steadily put a little more distance in the second half as they made 21-of-30 free throw attempts. The Privateers only visited the line 11 times in the game.
Three players reached double figures for UNO, led by Davis' season-high 21 points. Wilson put up 11 points, all of those coming in the second half. Angelo battled through foul trouble to add 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Melissa Jensen had a team-high 9 rebounds.
McNeese was led by Allison Baggett who scored 22 points while shooting 8-for-22 from the field. Alaina Verdin added 19 points, and went 9-for-13 from the free throw line. Two Cowgirls pulled down double figure rebounds: Ariana James had 11 boards and Cecilia Okoye added 10 boards.
UNO will play their first conference home game in their next outing when they take on Abilene Christian on Jan. 9. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
