Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. – The New Orleans Privateers volleyball team (6-14, 0-6 Southland) took the first two sets, but could not withstand a furious rally in a 3-2 loss (28-30, 19-25, 25-17, 25-23, 17-15) to the Southern Jaguars (6-9, 2-1 SWAC) on Thursday night at Clifford Seymour Gym.
The Privateers took the first two sets including a long first set at 30-28. The Jaguars responded by taking the third set at 25-17. Then Phalen Clark recorded a kill to preserve the fourth set for the home side at 25-23, setting up the fifth and final set.
New Orleans broke open a 3-3 tie with a 6-0 run, but that was quickly answered as Southern scored the next six points to level the score. A
Rondolyn Bryant kill put the Privateers on set and match point leading 14-13. However, the Jaguars tied the score to end it to extra rallies. Southern won the match after a service error and a bad set accounted for the final two points.
It was the second time New Orleans has gone the distance in a match this season. The Privateers also lost a five-set affair in the opening weekend of the season when they fell to Prairie View A&M at the Texas Southern Invitational.
The Privateers were led offensively by
Mikayla Sellers-Wiebe who racked up 16 kills with only one error on 38 attacks for a hitting percentage of .395. Sellers-Wiebe also added 16 digs and five aces on the night.
Cara Sander and
Taylor Berry had 13 and 11 kills respectively.
Sara Hammoutene recorded 50 assists and
Celeste Ramirez led the team with 21 digs.
Marisol Macias led all players in kills with 19. Leilani Lealaimatafao and Shaunita Carr each added 12 kills. Lealaimatafao also was in on six blocks (two solo, four assist). Diamond Williams had a match high 31 digs.
The Privateers will go back to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Hammond to face Southeastern.
