NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-23, 0-12) out-rebounded Nicholls State (13-10, 8-4) but it wasn't enough as the Privateers fell 63-45 on Thursday night at the Lakefront Arena.
The Privateers grabbed two separate leads to start the game.
Amber Clay started with a bucket to put New Orleans on the board first. After Nicholls quickly tied the game at 2-2,
Octavia Wilson hit a baseline jumper to put the Privateers up 4-2. That was the last lead New Orleans would see as Nicholls scored the next nine points.
The Colonels extended their lead to 21-6 with 11:39 remaining. New Orleans cut the deficit down to single digits by scoring the next seven points in the next two minutes of action. The Colonels though closed the half strong with proficient outside shooting. Nicholls scored 16 of the last 18 points of the half to carry a 37-15 lead into the locker room. The Colonels hit six triples in the opening half.
New Orleans was able to out-score the Colonels in the second half with better ball movement, but could not get enough stops to threaten after facing a 22-point deficit at the break. New Orleans wound up out-scoring Nicholls 30-26 in the second half.
Octavia Wilson led the Privateers with 12 points.
Amber Clay and
Danielle Davis added eight points.
Yasmin Taylor and
Raven Coleman paced a strong effort on the boards with 12 and 11 rebounds respectively. Clay also added seven boards. The Privateers had a 44-37 edge on the boards.
Three Colonels scored in double figures led by Jenny Nash who threw down a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Nash also had seven steals and six blocks. Emani White scored 15 points, but only shot 5-of-20 from the field. Jasmine Scott added 10 for the Colonels who were held to just 33.3 percent from the field in the closing half.
New Orleans will search for their first win on Sunday against McNeese State. Tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
