NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-24, 0-13 Southland) were overwhelmed in the second half in an 84-54 loss to the McNeese State Cowgirls (15-9. 8-5) on Sunday afternoon at Lakefront Arena.
The Privateers scored the first six points of the game as McNeese struggled to find their footing. The Cowgirls missed their first four shots before Jayln Johnson converted a three-point play at the 16:32 mark. It was the beginning of a 13-0 run that spanned two and a half minutes.
New Orleans responded over the rest of the half by coming up with their highest-scoring first half on the season by pouring in 36 points on 44 percent shooting. The Cowgirls went to the half with a 43-36 lead though as they hit four triples. Both sides converted 13 free throws in the opening 20 minutes of play.
In the second half, McNeese spurted away. The Privateers were held without a field goal in the first 5:30 of the closing half before
Danielle Davis broke the drought. McNeese continued to pull away, in part because of efficient free throw shooting. The Cowgirls converted 27-of-33 free throws on the afternoon. Meanwhile, the Privateers made just five field goals in the second half.
New Orleans was led by
Samantha Gray who scored double figures for the first time this season with 10 points. Davis added nine points and
Octavia Wilson notched a career-high seven rebounds.
Amber Clay,
Raven Coleman, and
Jewel Angelo each added six points.
Johnson scored 26 points to pace the Cowgirls offense and was 14-of-15 from the free throw line. Allison Baggett added 19 points while sinking four-of-five triples. Victoria Rachal and Amber Donnes also achieved double figures with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The Privateers next will take on Southeastern in the third of a five-game home stand on Thursday, Feb. 20. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
