Privateers Come Up Short Versus Southeastern

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-25, 0-14 Southland) allowed 48 points in the paint in a 76-59 loss to the Southeastern Lady Lions (8-17, 7-6) on Thursday night at Lakefront Arena.

The Privateers had a strong start in the opening minutes, scoring seven points in the first four offensive possessions. Three different Privateers got on the board as part of an early 7-5 advantage with 17:40 remaining in the first half. Southeastern grabbed the lead back with a 7-2 run. It was capped by a three-point play by Nanna Pool. The Privateers kept it close halfway through the opening 20 minutes, trailing only 21-16 at the 10:42 mark. New Orleans only committed four turnovers in the first half, but ran cold as the game progressed.

The Lady Lions finished the half with a flourish, out-scoring the Privateers 22-8 in the final nine minutes of the half. Southeastern went to the break with a 43-24 lead, and scored 28 points in the paint while shooting 53.1 percent (17-for-32).

In the second half, Southeastern went on an early 10-4 when Privateers Head Coach Keeshawn Davenport put a new lineup into the game. Defensively, that change yielded some positive results as the Lady Lions were held to just five points in a six-minute span.

Octavia Wilson drained three triples, and led the team with 13 points after starting 1-for-13 from the field. Danielle Davis added 10 points and Ariele Davis had a team-high four assists. Yasmin Taylor chipped in with 10 rebounds including seven offensive boards.
The Privateers kept the turnover total to single digits, committing only eight miscues on the game. It marked the third time, New Orleans kept their turnover total to under 10 on the season.

Pacing the Lady Lions was Aja Gibson with 19 points on a perfect 8-for-8 from the field and 3-for-3 from the line. Symone Miller added 15 points while Pool fell just shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Erica Hernandez also wound up in double figures with 10 points. The Lady Lions out-rebounded the Privateers 49-38.

New Orleans next takes to the floor on Thursday, Feb. 27 at home against Stephen F. Austin. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
