NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (0-27, 0-16 Southland) fell just short in a 51-48 loss to the Northwestern State Lady Demons (16-12, 9-7) on Saturday at Lakefront Arena.
Janelle Perez converted a three-point play to give the Lady Demons their first lead of the half at 49-48. The Privateers missed two attempts to take the lead on the next possession, and were forced to foul. Perez went back to the line and converted two free throws with 8.2 seconds. The Privateers missed a shot on the other end that finished the game.
New Orleans started on fire by jumping out to a 22-7 advantage after the first seven minutes. The Privateers made four triples in that span while the Lady Demons missed 15 of their first 18 shots from the field. The Privateers were able to maintain a double digit advantage to the locker room at 34-22.
The Lady Demons scored the first seven points of the second half, but the Privateers answered with five straight. After Northwestern State scored six straight to cut the New Orleans lead to 39-35 with 12:58 left, the Privateers were able to have an answer until the final minutes of the contest. New Orleans was held without a point in the last 3:50.
Octavia Wilson led the Privateers with 17 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Wilson also added six rebounds and three assists.
Yasmin Taylor scored 11 points, all in the first half and
Amber Clay had six points and nine rebounds. New Orleans shot 52.4 percent in the first half, but only made 6-of-23 shots in the second half.
Trudy Armstead scored 14 points to lead the Lady Demons. Keisha Lee scored 11 of her 12 points in the second half. Kourtney Pennywell added 11 points off the bench. Northwestern State out-scored the Privateers 34-20 in the paint.
New Orleans will take to the road to finish the season with their next game coming against Lamar on Thursday, Mar. 6. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
