HUNTSVILLE, Texas – The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team fell behind early and struggled from field goal range in its 87-56 loss Saturday afternoon to the Sam Houston State Bearkats.
The Privateers (0-29, 0-18 Southland) were led by
Octavia Wilson in the season finale with 13 points, while Jewel Angel,
Amber Clay and
Danielle Davis followed her with eight points each. The Bearkats (13-16, 8-10 Southland) featured four players in double figures with Jasmine Johnson leading the charge with 18 points.
Sam Houston State also received a double-double from Angela Beadle with 12 points and 11 rebounds en route to winning the battle of the boards as a team, 44-to-27.
The Bearkats started the game on a tear, scoring 13 unanswered points before
Jewel Angelo put the Privateers on the board with a fast-break layup with 14:58 left in the first half. The Bearkats continued to pad its lead to as many as 30 points in the first period before going into halftime with a 29-point lead – 49-20.
In the second half, Sam Houston State extend its lead to as many as 43 points before calling off the cats and cruising to the win.
Sam Houston State will go on to participate in the Southland Conference tournament while New Orleans' campaign comes to an end.
