Men's Tennis Team Kicks Off Spring Season vs. BYU

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team opens up the spring season against a traditionally strong opponent in the BYU Cougars on Saturday at the University Tennis Center. The match gets underway at 2 p.m.

The Privateers will open up the spring after a fall season that was highlighted by several strong performances. Timo Kranz was back to form with a strong showing at the ITA Southern Regional in Auburn, running to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. Kranz followed up with a trip to the Flight 1 singles finals in the Big Easy Classic.

Freshman, Giacomo Adoncecchi burst onto the scene in his first two collegiate tournaments. After a run to the fourth round of the consolation bracket at Auburn, Adoncecchi ran to the Flight 2 finals in New Orleans against fellow teammate, Blake Gregor. Adoncecchi will pair with Kranz at #1 doubles.

The team has a lot of experience with five seniors on the roster. Rui Silva comes off a 9-7 record in singles last season and enters his senior year with 24 career victories. Silva alternated between the 1 and 2 position in singles last season.

BYU opened the spring with a split in the first weekend. After a 4-3 loss to Utah State, the Cougars rebounded by dropping Weber State 6-1. BYU has a roster that features only one senior in Francis Sargeant who was Second Team All-West Coast Conference last season. Andrey Goryachkov also offers returning experience. A junior from St. Petersburg, Goryachkov was second on the team in singles wins last season.

This will be the first time the Privateers will face the Cougars. The Privateers have won four of the last six season openers. Saturday will also mark the third meeting for New Orleans men's tennis against a WCC opponent.
