Privateers Snag Doubles Point but Fall to BYU

MATCH RESULTS

NEW ORLEANS, La.
– The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (0-1) snagged the doubles point but could not hold up in singles in a 5-2 loss to the BYU Cougars on Saturday afternoon at the University Tennis Center.

The Privateers' 1 and 2 doubles teams ensured a solid start to the day in the spring opener. Timo Kranz and Giacomo Adoncecchi won their match at 7-5 while Rui Silva and Blake Gregor coasted to a 6-2 win in the #2 doubles match.

In singles, BYU took over and swung two of the three matches that went three sets their way. Kranz won the first set against Francis Sargeant 6-3, but lost 7-5 in the second set. Sargeant then took control in the third set to lock up a point for the Cougars.

Gonzalo Garcia also fell on the short end of a three-set match after taking the first set at #3 singles. Garcia won the first set 6-2 against Andrey Goryachkov, but dropped the next two sets including the tiebreak set at 7-5.

The Privateers' lone singles win came from Blake Gregor at the 4 position. Gregor overcame losing the first set to defeat Jacob Sullivan 4-6, 6-2, 7-6. The Cougars moved to 2-1 on the season with the win. New Orleans will next travel to participate in two matches in Hattiesburg against Jacksonville State (Jan. 23) and Southern Miss (Jan. 25.)
