Men's Tennis Back in Action With Two-Match Weekend

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (0-1) looks ahead to two matches in a busy weekend ahead with two matches in Hattiesburg against Jacksonville State on Friday and Southern Miss on Sunday.

The Privateers came off their spring opener which was a 5-2 loss at the hands of BYU last Saturday. In the match, New Orleans gained the doubles point with wins at the 1 and 2 doubles positions from the combinations of Timo Kranz-Giacomo Adoncecchi and Blake Gregor-Rui Silva.

New Orleans had three singles matches go to three sets against the Cougars, but came up on the short end of two of those matches which made the difference in the spring opener. Friday will mark the second time the Privateers have met Jacksonville State in school history. The only meeting occurred in the 1998-99 season.

The Privateers have also had experience against their second opponent of the weekend, Southern Miss, in the fall season. Southern Miss fielded a team in the Big Easy Classic and both sent representatives to the ITA Southern Regional in Auburn. New Orleans went 3-1 in singles against Southern Miss and split two doubles matches at the Big Easy.

Jacksonville State is the defending Ohio Valley Conference champion after a 17-8 record last season. The Gamecocks also made the NCAA tournament. Jefferson Wendler-Filho is one of the key returners off a strong freshman campaign that saw him go 19-5 in singles.

This weekend also marks the spring opener for Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles participated in three tournaments during the fall season. Southern Miss filled both sides of the Flight 3 singles final in New Orleans with Alex Doleac and Mikhail Esipov. The Golden Eagles were 12-11 last season.

Friday's match against Jacksonville State is set for 10 a.m. The Privateers' tussle at Southern Miss will be for 1 p.m. on Sunday.
