Privateers Face Local Foe, Nicholls on Thursday

THE GAME:

The New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (2-14, 0-7) starts a conference weekend with two in-state opponents against the Nicholls Colonels (8-10, 4-3) on Thursday evening at Stopher Gym. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
 
The Privateers hit just 15 shots on Saturday in the last outing, a 58-46 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi last Saturday. New Orleans was hit with a 20-4 run early in the second half that put the game out of reach.
 
Nicholls took an overtime victory against Central Arkansas, winning 75-72 in their last outing. Shay Arnick tied a career-high with 18 points in the victory and the Colonels shot 58.3 percent from the field as a team. Four of the Colonels' seven conference games have been decided by five points or fewer and Nicholls is 2-2 in those contests. Jenny Nash leads the team in points, rebounds, assists, blocks, three-pointers made, and minutes.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Privateers were held to 23.8 percent shooting in a 58-46 loss to the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders. New Orleans was trailing 26-23 early in the second half, but conceded 20 of the next 24 points. Halie Matthews and Octavia Wilson co-led the team in scoring with seven points each. The Privateers also forced 24 Islanders turnovers.

NEXT UP:
The Privateers continue their in-state road swing at McNeese State on Saturday, Jan. 31. The game is set for a 4 p.m. tip.
 
NEWS AND NOTES:
FORCING THE ISSUE:
The Privateers have forced Southland opponents into an average of 17.9 turnovers per game in seven conference games, ranking fourth in that span. New Orleans has forced 20-plus turnovers on three occasions including most recently against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
EARNING THEIR STRIPES:
Since conference play has started, New Orleans has shot 71.7 percent from the free throw line, ranking fourth in the Southland in that stretch. However, the Privateers are 12th in the conference in free throw attempts, only ahead of Southeastern. Octavia Wilson and Randi Brown lead the team in free throws made (25).
 
BREAKING INTO THE ROTATION:
Dasia Batiste has gotten 34 minutes of action in her last two games. Batiste played just 26 minutes in her first eight appearances. Batiste scored five points in Saturday's game against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi .
