Privateers Women's Basketball Starts Southland Play Versus Lamar

THE GAME:
Fresh off a win to close the non-conference slate, the New Orleans Privateers women's basketball team (2-7) starts Southland play on Monday against the Lamar Cardinals (4-8, 1-0) on Monday evening at Lakefront Arena. Tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
 
The Privateers held on for a 58-55 victory over the Kent State Golden Flashes on Dec. 30. New Orleans led for 32 minutes of the game, and a free throw by Alexis Martin with 6.6 seconds left put the Privateers up four and they were able to hold on despite a wild finish.
 
Lamar opened up Southland action with a 67-62 win over Nicholls on Saturday, improving to 17-2 all-time against the Colonels at home. Lamar hit a 12-3 run over a four-minute span to grow their lead to 11 points with 1:34 left. JaMeisha Edwards had 20 points and seven assists on the night. The Cardinals have won two of their last three games.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Privateers defeated Kent State 58-55 for their first win over a Division I opponent this season and their second overall win. The game was close throughout with six points being the largest lead on either side. Halie Matthews led the team in points (12) and rebounds (six). Randi Brown went for double figures in points for a third straight game with 10 points.
 
THE OPPONENT:
Lamar has won four games on the year, but just one away from home in seven road games. The Cardinals started the season dropping the first five games, but have gone 4-3 since. JaMeisha Edwards has scored 39 points in her last two games after putting in 29 points in her first four appearances.

NEXT UP:
The Privateers will face their first road conference test at Incarnate Word on Thursday. New Orleans then returns home to face Sam Houston State on Saturday, Jan. 10.
 
 
NEWS AND NOTES:
CLEAN SWIPE:
Yasmin Taylor continues to hold in the top two in the Southland in steals per game (2.8) after recording two steals against Kent State. Taylor has had at least two steals in seven of the Privateers' nine games to date.
 
MATTHEWS RECORDS SEASON BESTS:
Halie Matthews tied a season-high by scoring 12 points against Kent State. Matthews also went for 12 points at Grand Canyon on Dec. 3. Matthews also logged a season-high 33 minutes and earned her second consecutive start, but did suffer a head injury near the end of the win last Tuesday.
 
TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS:
The Privateers turned in a season-low in turnovers, committing only 10 against Kent State. The previous low mark was 15 against Grand Canyon. New Orleans also won their first game this season despite getting out-rebounded.
