NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (4-3, 1-0) returned home and recorded resounding wins in the latter positions in singles to earn a 5-2 victory over the Tyler JC Apaches (3-2) on Sunday at the University Tennis Center.
The day started with Tyler taking the match at the first doubles position 8-1. New Orleans got an 8-6 win from
Rui Silva and
Blake Gregor though and clinched the first point with an 8-1 triumph by
Giacomo Adoncecchi and
Romain Lefevre at #3 doubles.
In singles, Tyler took matches at each of the first two positions in straight sets. However, New Orleans proved the deeper team taking every match at the 3-through-6 position in singles to help clinch the win. Each player won in straight sets and no player lost more than five games in the four New Orleans singles wins.
"I'm really proud of the way we executed today," said Coach
Burzis Kanga. "Across the board, everyone played wonderful today. On any given day, they (Tyler JC) can play with any Division I school in the country."
Lefevre put a cap on a strong weekend, taking his singles match 6-1, 6-2 at the 5 spot against Jonah Candelario. Lefevre finished up a 4-0 weekend after collecting a victory in singles and doubles on Friday against Abilene Christian.
Adoncecchi won his match at 6-2, 6-2 in the 6 spot. Gregor continues to roll along in singles after picking up a 6-0, 6-1 win.
Gonzalo Garcia also earned a singles victory with a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Ciro Lampassas.
The Privateers will next travel to face Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday, Feb. 20. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
