BOX SCORE NEW ORLEANS, La. – The New Orleans Privateers men's tennis team (5-4, 2-0) staged a big comeback to take the doubles point and dominated singles play on their way to a 6-1 victory over the Nicholls Colonels (1-6, 0-1) at the University Tennis Center on Friday.
With the two teams splitting the first two doubles matches to finish, the doubles point came down to the 2 position.
Rui Silva and
Blake Gregor were trailing 7-5, but held serve easily then broke the service of to send it to a tiebreak. Silva and Gregor cruised to a 7-3 decision in the deciding point to give the Privateers the doubles point.
In singles, the Privateers won four of their five matches in straight sets.
Gonzalo Garcia was the only Privateer to be extended to three sets. Garcia took the first set 6-3, but lost the second set at 6-2. In the third, Garcia came back to overwhelm his opponent, Bernard Wezeman to earn the point.
Blake Gregor continued his winning streak by taking a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Partha Adavelly. The Privateers also earned singles wins from
Timo Kranz,
Rui Silva, and
Romain Lefevre. New Orleans also saw the return of
Christoffer Appelgren from injury as he played with Kranz in doubles.
The Privateers will start a three-match non-conference stretch on the road against Southern Illinois next Sunday. The match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
